Two related website duties: to keep the DMCA safe harbor for hosting user content, a site must designate and register a takedown agent and run a notice-and-takedown process (17 U.S.C. § 512); and, separately, it must not remove or alter the copyright management information (credit, attribution, metadata) on images it uses (17 U.S.C. § 1202), which carries $2,500–$25,000 statutory damages per violation.
